Services

Market Intelligence

TIR compiles an annual survey of trading activities within the heritage and leisure railway sector from published sources, public accounts and direct enquiries.

From this data TIR undertakes an analysis of market trends and benchmarks them against national and regional trends in Tourism data. TIR is able to advise on a range of market related business decisions including pricing strategies against benchmark and specific data.

Carbon Footprint

TIR has commenced an independent research project into the carbon footprint including Co2 per passenger mile values for heritage railways, particularly those operating steam traction. As National and International legislation moves inexorably towards charging of carbon emissions (irrespective of the issues surrounding causes of Global Climate Change on which we take a neutral stance) such operators would be well advised to begin considering how such an environment would impact their business and consider steps to ensure that the impact on the performance of the business is changed from a negative one to a positive outcome through pro-active choices.

TIR has undertaken some research into the cost-effectiveness of some alternative sources of fuel and is able to advise clients on available options.

Track Standards

TIR is undertaking development of a revised set of standards for narrow gauge track. Currently there are no published standards (Permanent Way Institution has yet to produce a document in its series 'British railway Track Standards' covering narrow gauge). TIR has received permission from the Department for Energy for updating and adaptation of NCB publication 'Narrow gauge Track for underground haulage' (1970) as basis for new Standard Publication. Work is being undertaken by TIR in concert with other experienced professionals and document should be Published in early 2011.
